What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy is a form of cognitive-behavioral therapy developed by Dr. Marsha Linehan. DBT combines acceptance strategies with change strategies to help people who experience emotions more intensely. It’s particularly effective for individuals living with:

  • Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

  • Chronic emotion dysregulation

  • Suicidal thoughts or behaviors

  • Self-injury

  • PTSD

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Disordered eating

  • Substance use

Through DBT, clients learn practical, life-changing skills in four key areas:

  1. Mindfulness – Stay present and grounded

  2. Distress Tolerance – Survive crisis without making it worse

  3. Emotion Regulation – Understand and manage your feelings

  4. Interpersonal Effectiveness – Build and maintain healthy relationships
